About the Credit Management Research Centre (CMRC)
The Credit Management Research Centre (CMRC) is an independent research centre specialising in credit risk, business finance, and financial system analysis. The Centre produces rigorous, data-driven research designed to inform public policy, support financial institutions, and improve the practice of lending and credit management.
CMRC operates at the intersection of academic research, industry application, and policy engagement. Its work is grounded in large-scale empirical analysis and advanced econometric methods, with a focus on areas where conventional approaches provide limited insight. This includes the measurement and drivers of credit default, fraud and financial misrepresentation, the functioning of SME lending markets, and the role of equity finance in supporting business growth.
A defining feature of the Centre’s work is its emphasis on real-world financial systems. Research is frequently based on large administrative and commercial datasets, enabling detailed analysis of lending outcomes, borrower behaviour, and institutional decision-making. This approach allows CMRC to contribute evidence on issues of direct relevance to regulators, government bodies, and financial market participants.
The Centre’s research has addressed a range of policy-relevant topics, including the design and performance of government-backed lending schemes, the identification and classification of fraud in large loan portfolios, and the existence and scale of equity finance gaps across UK regions and sectors. Across these areas, the focus is not only on measurement, but on understanding how institutional design, incentives, and information constraints shape observed outcomes.
Leadership
CMRC is led by Professor Nicholas Wilson, a recognised authority in credit risk, SME finance, and financial systems research. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Credit Management (FCICM), reflecting longstanding contributions to the development of credit management practice.
Professor Wilson has an extensive track record of research and policy engagement spanning several decades. His work has been widely cited in academic literature and has informed government policy discussions and industry practice in both credit and equity finance. This includes contributions to understanding SME financing constraints, the structure of lending markets, and the behaviour of firms under different financing conditions.
His research has been used in policy contexts including the assessment of equity finance gaps in the UK economy and the evaluation of financial interventions. In addition, he has worked with a wide range of stakeholders, including financial institutions, government departments, and professional bodies, providing analysis and evidence to support decision-making in complex financial environments.
The Centre reflects this combined academic and practitioner perspective. While grounded in rigorous analytical methods, its work is explicitly oriented towards practical relevance and real-world impact.
Engagement
CMRC engages with a broad set of stakeholders across the financial ecosystem. This includes collaboration with financial institutions, advisory work for policy bodies, and contributions to public debate on issues in credit and business finance.
The Centre welcomes opportunities for commissioned research, collaborative projects, and policy engagement.
